Original names for dogs? What would really be unique is not having a name!

This post is also available in: Español

There are things that from being very simple end up to be really complicated. At least for the most naive souls. For example, whats the perfect name for your dog? Are there better or worse names for our pet? That is to say, is it preferable to choose a name that we believe that it will define our dog, even if it’s complicated to write and to remember or perhaps the best decision is a short and powerful name that can be recognizable at any time?

HANNIKO advices for naming your dog

Just as everything in life, the answer is, “Be free, my friend!”

Despite the pressure, there’s no need to dramatize. There’s nothing to worry about, either way all dogs end up having a name. If you’ve come by the HANNIKO house asking for advice, don’t you worry, we’re pretty sure you’ll figure something out.

In HANNIKO we made it this way

We’ve already told you the story of our three ambassador dogs, the three Hanniko House members, so you already know that the three of them have had a difficult start in life that ended up bringing them to the animal shelter. That’s where we went to find them, and that’s from where we took them home with us with their respective names: Ani’s name was the same when we met her, and also Kira’s.

But go ahead, cause in HANNIKO we think it’s great that the new owner keeps the dogs old name as it is also great to name him with a new one. And we will tell you why.

If it’s hard for you to say it, there must be a reason behind it

When we decided to adopt the little big Otto, his name was still “Narco”. We didn’t feel very enthusiastic about the name. Nevertheless, for a moment we thought of keeping the name as it was… But something deep inside told us that the choice of that name, accompanying his greatness and corpulence and, in addition, with that first stretch of his so sad beginning of life, were marking him in some way. And in a negative sense.

We weren’t very excited either about our kids calling “Narco” to a loved one, and that one day when they’d discover the meaning of the name, they’d start to associate the connotations of such a pernicious concept with a dog as adorable as ours.

What we want to say is that we were not very happy with the name “Narco”. In case you haven’t noticed yet.

So we changed his name. We’ve always liked “Otto”, and so it has been, as you can see in his customized collar.

How to choose dog names

With joyfulness, always with joyfulness. If you’re in the position where that little puppy has arrived in your life with no name, do not panic. As we said before, taste and intuition must prevail over everything, despite the many theories out there.

There’s a thesis out there that says that it is a good idea to name your dog with a short and easy name. By easy, we understand a name that contains a sound (a phoneme) or group of recognizable sounds. A, E, U, or B, T, S, are some arbitrary examples. Examples such as Teddy, Buddy, Sam or Sparky.

However, the experience tells us that if we choose a long name for our dog, we will end up naturally shortening it if that suits our ends. And there is no more effective and recognizable dog name than the one pronounced by its owner at the right time and at the right tone.

Our best friend

Tokien didn’t have a dog

At least not in the real life, not that we know. In his literature life at least two are known. One of them is Huan, who can be seen in the Middle Earth of The Lord of the Rings. The other one is Rover, the main character in the story called Roverandom… You can see now, these are both examples of weird names for dogs. And however, paradoxically, nowadays there are many more dogs that are named after Frodo, Hobbit, Saruman, Legolas or even Gollum.

We could make a similar list of dog names with Game of Thrones main characters, or even with football player names, singers, or even youtubers!…

The matter of choosing a name, is distributed by neighborhoods. By geographical areas, if you prefer. In general, and by logic, the names of dogs in English are very common in the whole world. But for example, in Spain, the names Luna, Laika or Toby are as classic as current. Nonetheless, if you limit the statistics to places like Euskadi, you will find mythical and successful Basque dog names such as Beltza, Txuri, Bizkor or Lagun.

Your dog is a god for you

That doesn’t mean necessarily that he needs to have a “divine” name. And, however, the list of names of gods is enormous. Thor is one of the most recurrent. The interesting story about the Thunder God of Viking mythology is more known than ever, thanks to the recent adaptations of the myth, which has been given a touch of superhero to the Nordic deity by excellence.

Dog love

Zeus and Apolo, or Afrodita or Venus are other examples of male and female dog names that come from names of gods, in this case from Roman and Greek mythology.
