Well, exactly the same happens to dogs. To be honest, it’s easier for them to get to see the good side of life, but maybe they get to see us so happy in summer that they can’t avoid feeling our same happiness. At this state, we’re not going to tell you that our hairy friends dominate empathy much better than those who walk on two legs.

Lets celebrate then summer as it deserves. But always keeping an eye on their security and a quiet life. Did you know there’s many people that don’t take into account the two security hours we need to stay dry after a meal and before going into the water? Can you believe it? Isn’t anyone afraid of stomach cramps any more? Anyways, today in HANNIKO we are going to give you 10 tips that you should have into account to have a great and unforgettable summer with your dog.

1. Water

First of all and most importantly: Don’t you ever run out of water. Sometimes routine and inertia take a more important place in our minds than the pure logic and we don’t get to think that maybe our dog will need to drink more water on those sunny hot days. However, when the temperature rise starts, take a look at his bowl periodically and identify whats his new rhythm of hydration.

Havard bowl and Lauge yellow leather collar of HANNIKO

You should also take this into account when you two go for a walk. Get used to bring a water container with you. A bottle and a portable bowl are enough. If perhaps you forget about it someday, there is an MacGyver tip you can use by using a waste bag (those that you bring with you for his poops, could be worth) as a bowl improving whenever you come by a water fountain.

Some dogs love to get wet when it’s hot out there, and others not that much. Either ways, a little extra hydration never hurts.

2. Hair

It is very normal to find ourselves with shaved dogs when we’re close to summer. Poor doggie (the owners say) he was roasting with all that hair… Well, from here we say to you out loud, just like a teen that’s been influenced by a terrible tv comercial: “IT’S A COMPLETE MISTAKE!”

The hair is a natural protector for dogs… also in summer. In this period of extreme hot temperatures, the hair protects them of the heat, as it works as a refrigerant layer. At the same time it acts as a sunscreen, as their skin is very sensible to the sun and so their epidermis can suffer damages if its not properly protected.

The best idea is not shaving their hair in summer, but to carefully take care of their hair: brush it, get rid of dead hair and remove the knots.

3. A promenade

It is time to spend most of the day time in the streets. If your dog is full of energy, you’ll probably be the first one who can’t wait for that lovely weather to come so that you can take him outside and so that he expels all that energy. But maybe the heat makes your dog want to stay home or simply he’s got a certain age now and he’s not prepared for many jogs. If you’re thinking of making longer walks, try to take into account what you’re dog may think about it. At least consider it.

4. Parasites

Precisely the increase of the time of promenades, added to the possibility of exploring new lands by having more free time, and even the proper characteristics of the summer season, are a great breeding ground for parasites. Fleas, ticks, mites, etc., are typical in summer. Find out about pills, pipettes, collars… and also about the best way to give your dog preventive baths.

5. Wounds

In summer infections are big players in veterinary consultations: Some of them are the result of injuries produced in the heat of dog enjoyment. Thorns on the pad or on the leg, Stone cuts, pointed woods, nettles … There are many causes that can cause injuries to your dog, but the main ones are the increase in activity and exploring unknown terrains. We advise you to examine your dog after a special day of mountain and, if possible, carry a first aid kit with tweezers, disinfectant and antiseptic.

6. Car

We are all a bit sick of listening the same news every summer: dogs trapped in cars while the owners are out for groceries that end up dying by dehydration. It is very but very little the time that a dog needs to get dehydrated inside a car, specially if the vehicle is exposed to a excesive heat. Therefore, we give you a very simple and direct advise: Don’t you ever leave your dog locked in the car. And if for instance you find a dog in this situation and you think that he’s in serious danger, call the Police. We’d like to tell you that you could take a picture of the situation so that you have an alibi and proof of it to break the window of the vehicle, but this is only a hoax that’s on the internet.

7. Poison

It is a probability matter. In summer we spend more time in the streets: you, your dog… and all of those unscrupulous that like to spend their time poisoning dogs. Try to be always alert on this matter, but specially when you and your dog visit new and unknown places.

8. UAO

Unidentified annoying objects. In summer the possibilities of your dog suffering a discomfort of grains, flowers spikes, herbs, insects etc. invading much of their holes like nose, mouth eyes and specially ears are multiplied. Go for a periodic review with your pet and, if you notice the symptoms of these discomforts after a first examination take him to the veterinarian, because sometimes it can also end up with an infection.

9. Travelling

Summer is still the most traveled time of the year. If you want to do it safely, check out this HANNIKO article, where we give you some good advice to travel with your dog with guarantees.

10.
